Where music meets Earth

Music School Reinach

As recently as spring 2025, headlines about the high vacancy rate of office space were once again making the rounds in Switzerland. So, what do you do with older office properties that are no longer being used for their original purpose? The municipality of Reinach and the company Burkhardt Entwicklungen have found a solution for one such property, which is owned by Burckhardt. The building is about to become a music school for the municipality.

In order to realise the conversion and renovation as resource-efficiently as possible, the architects at Burckhardt have opted for targeted interventions where necessary. Wherever new materials are used, they are largely natural, recycled or reused from the existing building in a new form. Hence, the future concert hall for up to 90 people will feature a rounded earth block wall made from Oxablocs. The Oxablocs, developed jointly by Terrabloc and Oxara, are made with Oxabrick® Loko, the mineral activator for stabilised pressed earth blocks. Covering an area of around 40m2, they not only create a visual framework for the stage. The moisture-regulating properties of the clay blocks also ensure a good indoor climate in this place for music and encounters.
