Swiss technology in Cameroon.
The Swiss Embassy in Cameroon is more than a functional space - it’s a statement about how architecture, diplomacy, and low-carbon solutions can go hand in hand. Designed by Caesar Zumthor Architekten and Nord Architekten, the project consists of three buildings - chancellery, residence, and connecting structure - grouped around a central courtyard and embedded in lush greenery.
A cornerstone of the embassy’s project is its commitment to sustainable construction with local resources, reflecting the core values of Oxara. A defining feature of the project is the use of compressed earth blocks made from excavation materials on-site. By avoiding cement, the project not only reduces its environmental impact but also embraces circularity and traditional building methods.
Prior to the construction start Oxara conducted comprehensive earth suitability analyses in Switzerland. It confirmed the viability of the Oxabrick® Loko admixture with the local excavation material. Laboratory-scale trials in Switzerland were validated at full scale on-site in Cameroon by local contractors, demonstrating the practical application of this sustainable technology.
To facilitate the project Oxara staff met with local staff for a knowledge transfer on the utilisation of Oxara’s products. As of summer 2025 the excavation of material has already begun and the Oxabrick® Loko admixture is on its way to Cameroon to start the brick production. The masonry work for outer and inner walls is scheduled for the beginning of 2026.
Further emphasizing sustainability, the embassy incorporates photovoltaic systems to achieve climate-neutral operations. The use of locally sourced materials like wood, natural stone, and compressed earth bricks minimizes embodied energy, while engaging local construction firms bolsters the regional economy and preserves traditional building techniques.
